British painter born in Kettering, Northamptonshire. In 1939 studied History and Anthropology at Cambridge University, and in 1940-41 landscape architecture at Ohio State University, Columbus. In 1951-52 worked as theatrical designer in North Devon. The following year began painting full-time. 1953-55 lived in Paris. 1963, prizewinner at “John Moores Exhibition”, Liverpool (and 1965). In 1965 participated at The Responsive Eye, MoMA, 1967 Recent British Painting, Tate Gallery, London. In 1969 co-founded the Systems Group with Jefferey Steele and others, 1977 British Painting, 1952-1957 Royal Academy of Arts, London, 1984 retrospective, Serpentine Gallery, London, 1985 Imaginary Construire, ARC, Paris, 1990 Center for International Contemporary Art, New York, 1993 Muzeum Sztuki, Lódz, The sixties Art Scene in London, Barbican Art Gallery, London.
