Biography
Niizuma is a well-recognized world-wide Japanese stone sculptor. He was born in
Tokyo, Japan, lived in New York and Sintra, Portugal and died in Portugal. He graduated
from the National Tokyo University of Arts, Tokyo. From 1964-70 he was instructor at
the Brooklyn Museum Art School, New York. 1972-84 Adjunct Professor, Columbia
University School of the Arts, New York, 1983 Director, Stone Institute of New York.
Niizuma participated and organized several international Stone Sculpture Symposiums,
in Vermont, Austria, New York, Dublin, Portugal and Japan. A selection of solo
exhibitions: 1966 Howard Wise Gallery, New York, 1971 Rockefeller University, New
York, 1973 Fimpel, Hanover and Andre Emmerich Galerie, Zurich, 1976 Center for
International Arts, New York, Seibu Museum of Art, Tokyo, 1982 Rosenberg Fine Arts
Gallery, Toronto, Canada, 1984 Vorpal Gallery, San Francisco, CA, Designers's
Emporium, Honolulu, Hawaii; 1988 Galleria Quadrum, Lisbon, Portugal, 1989
Foundation Veranneman, Belgium. Niizuma is represented in the Collections of the
Museum of Modern Art, New York, The Guggenheim Museum, The National Museum
of Modern Art, Tokyo, The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, Kyoto, among
many other institutions. Niizuma, who comprehended the mind of stone, gave full play to
the textual qualities of stone in order to convey his idea to it. Regardless of the size of his
works, his works take on a dignified and meditative appearance.
The Berardo Collection owns the artists' last works, approximately 50 pieces.
