Biography
American artist born in Barbados. Lives in Bali, Indonesia. First one-man show in New York in 1986. In opposition to the figurative and expressionist movements of the beginning of the 80's, a group appeared in New York calling themselves Neo-Geo or Simulationists. The symbols of the industrial age provide the main focus of his objects and images, as do the urban semiotics of brand signs and labels and signs standing for triviality, kitsch and sexual clichés, In the early 80's he made pictures composed of large ornamental letters. By the end of the nineties, he was painting self-portraits in the form of large nudes - caricatured, distorted sexual stereotypes that show the artist as hell's angel, body-building champion, Californian surfer or New York whore. He also built a series of black containers called "Anthropospheres" These boxes are designed as survival capsules. They appear to be intended to conserve for posterity highly important data for the preservation of mankind.
