Portuguese sculptor born in Lisbon, has studied sculpture in the Fine Arts School of Lisbon (ESBAL) and attended the Kunstakademie, Düsseldorf. His work is influenced by the German Romanticism. Since the late 80's Chafes has worked in iron and other themes like life, death and fear which have become inherent in his artwork. He has published two books Fragmentos de Novalis (A&A, 1992) which is composed of selected texts translated by his own drawings, and Würzburg, Bolton, Landing, where he gathers texts by Höderlin, Rilke, Novalis and others, with photographs taken by himself of gloomy landscapes.
