Portuguese artist born in Vidago. In 1951-52 studied painting at Fine Arts School of Lisbon (ESBAL). He shares his studio with José Escada, René Bertholo and Gonçalo Duarte. He shows his works for the first time in 1956 (1st Salão dos Artistas de Hoje, Lisbon). In 1957 goes to Paris where he studies at Academie de la Grande-with Henri Goetz. First solo exhibition, in Lisbon, 1959. and, in the same year goes back to Paris. He collaborates in KWY art publication, becoming one of the members of this Group and participating in its exhibitions. He meets António Saura, painter of the group El Paso, bringing along the participation of this Spanish group in KWY publication. In 1964 teaches at the Maidstone College of Art, in London. In1967 he returns to Lisbon , beginning to work almost exclusively as stage designer. In 1970, he did his first performance at his solo exhibition O Espírito da Letra, by destroying all the "object-letters" in the exhibition., to which was awarded Prize Soquil 70. During the 70's and 80's he did several exhibitions and performances (he was one of the pioneers of performance in Portugal), exploring different materials (plexiglas, flexible and regid "poliuretano" among others). Serralves Foundation, Oporto has shown a retrospective of his work in 2002.
