American painter, born in Omaha, Nebraska. Studied at the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles from 1956 to 1960. Teaches at the University of California Recent retrospectives include the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam, 1990, Pompidou, Rotterdam, Barcelona, London, Los Angeles. Selected exhibitions: 1962, New Paintings of Common Objects, Pasadena Art Museum, California, 1965, Words and Images, Guggenheim. In 1968 he had his first exhibition in Europe at the Galerie Rudolf Zwirner, Köln, in 1969 Pop Art, Hayward Gallery, London, 1973, Leo Castelli Gallery, New York. Lives in the Venice area of Los Angeles.
