Biography

Vito Acconci is an installation, performance and video artist, architect, and landscape architect, born and living in New York. He received a B.A. from the College of the Holy Cross in 1962 and an M.F.A. from the University of Iowa. Acconci became a performance and video artist in the late 1960s and early 1970s, using his own body as a subject for photography, film, video, and performance. His performance and video work was marked heavily by confrontation. In the mid 1970s, Acconci expanded his metier into the world of audio/visual installations. Began live performances and "situations" in New York. First one-person exhibition, Rhode Island School of Design, Providence. 1970: Began working with video and Super 8 film. Exhibitions (selection) "Information," MoMA. 1970-72: Made film Body Art. 1972: Executed Seedbed, Sonnabend Gallery, New York. Documenta 5, Kassel (1977, 1982). 1975: Museum of Conceptual Art, San Francisco. Sao Paolo Biennale. 1976: Venice Biennale (and 1978). 1977: The Kitchen Center for Video and Music, New York (where he subsequently exhibited frequently). 1978:MoMA, San Francisco; Whitney. Retrospective, Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago. 1982: "'60-80: Attitudes/Concepts/ Images," Stedelijk, Amsterdam. 1988: MoMA. Retrospective exhibition of photoworks, videos, and Super 8 film. More recently, the artist has worked with the Architecture Association and focused on architecture and landscape design that integrates public and private space. Acconci has taught at many institutions, including the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, Halifax; California Institute of the Arts, Valencia; Cooper Union; School of the Art Institute of Chicago; Yale University; and the Parsons School of Design.
