Biography

Tomas Sanchez was born in Cienfuegos, Cuba. Completed studies in the San Alejandro Academy and later went on to the Cuban National School of Art. He was associated with the neo-figuration movement of Cuba in the 1960s and 1970s and was awarded the Joan Miró prize, in Barcelona, plus other major prizes in Cuba. Sánchez is best recognized for his paintings of carefully detailed tropical landscapes. His landscapes are marked by surrealist and neo-geo undertones with his use of unusual angles and geometric forms. His paintings of idealistic landscapes are contrasted by his depictions of garbage sites, which he uses to criticize the pollution of the environment, The artist currently lives in South Florida. He has had several personal exhibitions in Cuba, Spain, Greece, Austria, etc.
