Tilsa Tsuchiya was born to a Japanese father and Peruvian mother in Lima. The artist studied at the School of Fine Art in Lima from 1954 to 1959 where she was influenced by thepopular themes of social realism, indigenous subject matter and abstraction. She personalized these themes in her work by fusing them with a Japaneses influence and Quechan mythology. She traveled to Europe and studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts and the Sorbonne. The artist was internationally recognized as part of the small goup of surrealist Peruvian artists that emerged during the 1960s.
